7 Things to Start Doing for Yourself in the New Year

A new year has arrived and now is the perfect time to start making goals for 2020—but making resolutions, goals, and plans can sometimes be challenging, especially if you simply don’t know where to start. So to help you become the best version of yourself this year and to prevent you from feeling overwhelmed with setting your goals, here are a few simple things you should start doing for yourself this year.

Put Your Phone Down

Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms tend to keep people on their phones for several hours a day. And while social media can help people connect online, it can result in a disconnect in real life. A US National Institutes of Health (NIH) study found that people who use social media frequently were 2.7 times more likely to experience depression. So put down your phone and experience the real world around you.

Spend Time With The Right People

Do you someone in your life who only wants to hang out when they need something from you? Or do you have someone in your life who constantly puts you down? Well, there’s no room for these people in your life from now on. Cutting out toxic people can be one of the hardest things you’ll have to do—but it can also be the most rewarding.

Invest In Your Physical Health

While almost every single person vows to exercise more and eat healthier in the new year, not many people actually follow through with it. But choosing to improve your physical health is one of the best things you can do for yourself. So even if it’s going on a walk around the neighborhood every evening, try to make small, but meaningful, investments in your physical health.

Make Time To Travel

Life is far too short to spend it all in one place—so if traveling is something you’re interested in and you have the financial means to do so, do it! And if you don’t have anyone who wants to travel with you, then go alone. You’d be surprised at how fun and inspiring a solo trip can be.

But before you travel anywhere, make sure you have the best health insurance possible. Having travel health insurance is important because you never know what can happen. If you get sick or injured while you’re away from home, you want to know you’ll be covered. So choose an insurance plan that gives you the right coverage and access to great medical care wherever you are in the world.

Pursue Your Passions

Everyone has something they’re passionate about. Whether it’s drawing, reading, yoga, or animals, it’s important to acknowledge your passions and explore them. Even if you’re in college you can take simple steps to continue learning and fueling your passions. For example, if you’re majoring in English, journalism, or theater, you can apply for the TodayTix 2020 Education Scholarship so you can continue with your education—college is just the first step in pursuing your passions and getting your dream job after graduation.

Works Towards Financial Goals

Every adult should continuously re-evaluate their financial situation. If you have certain financial goals, like putting $1,000 away in savings by the end of the year or saving up for your dream vacation, you need to create an action plan to reach your goals. Maybe the first step is meeting with a financial planner who can offer advice on savings and investments. Or if you want to buy a house this year, meet with a loan officer to see how much you need to save and where you can start.

Try Something New

If you do one thing for yourself this year, try something new. While stepping out of your comfort zone can be scary, it can also be really rewarding. A new year is a fresh start and it’s important to take advantage of this new beginning. So make 2020 all about you and keep these tips in mind to have the best year yet.
